Day 8:30 AM: I get to my office (lets be honest, cubicle) to start my work. We start my outlook, read new emails, and react to the majority of them (some will need shmoop.pro some attention that is extra in the day.) I’m very close to finishing my one walk for your day.
8:45-9:00 AM: I open three windows: 1) the internet, 2) our very own USC database that is internal and 3) my grade point average (GPA) calculator. We use the internet to see the Application that is common database to help keep documents of everything, and just as it sounds, the GPA calculator to determine GPAs. I’m always very happy once I see a whole history that is academic. USC asks applicants to record their classes and grades by topic (English, math, foreign language, social sciences etc…) therefore that it’s obvious the classes a student took in ninth through eleventh grade. I’m also able to see the grades in a clear and organized way. I begin reading applications.
9:01 AM: Someone just started talking about fantasy football. As a first time player, this immediately catches my attention (I happened to be eliminated in the first round of playoffs after investing the whole season as quantity one in my league of sixteen players…just sayin…) I battle to stay focused but my stength is still strong this at the beginning of the morning.
9:02 AM 12:00 PM: I continue reading… the first thing we look at in a pupil’s application is their first and second choice major (mainly because oahu is the first thing I see when I open an application.) I then take a look at academics, including standardized test scores and the academic history. Next I’ll consider most of the qualitative aspects: short answer concerns, essays, and activity section (helpful hint: always spell out acronyms wherever you use them. We do not know most of the programs available in your school or community.) We’ll wrap the application up with letter of recommendation. Some students may also have information that is additional interview reports, which we’ll always read final. While I’m reading everything, I’ll take notes as I get. A number of us will read the application that is whole then take down notes, but personally, I like to write when I go. We find I’m more thorough that real means although it might take a bit longer general. Generally speaking, my notes will describe each portion i have read drawing a conclusion which will help me understand the student once I come back to the application later on.
9:45 AM: I think about when and the things I’m planning to eat for lunch.
10:30 AM: Chipotle? Pizza?
11:30 AM: Or must I be healthy and eat a salad? Decisions decisions….
12 PM: LUNCH TIME!!!
12:45 PM: right back to applications…. this pupil is acknowledged by me! I met I was visiting a school in Virginia with them when. He told me he was going to create about program he started at his school…turned out great!
Sometime into the afternoon: I’ll answer the phone, respond to emails as they can be found in (we try to respond to you once I can,) and take a few water breaks.
4:00/30 I’ll try to summary reading applications for the afternoon and spend the hour that is last whatever else needs tending to (like writing this web site.) Sometimes I’ll have a meeting in the morning or afternoon therefore this portion of my day can differ in timing. But on a day that is typical I spend this time at the end.
5:00 PM: Time to go home and play with my new puppy. She’s the one within the photo in case you were wondering! Ã°Å¸â„¢â€š
Counselor on Contact
It’s Wednesday morning and i am arriving to work. Instead of heading to my office, I head to the Admission Center because I am ‘on contact.’ Just What does which means that exactly? Well, about once a month, it’s my responsibility to sit within the admission center, give the admission presentations, and respond to any questions from students who visit. ( it means we have an excuse getting Coffee Bean since it’s in the same building.)
8:00 a.m. After grabbing my café vanilla, I actually do an email that is quick and check my teeth before going into the presentation space. Since is Wednesday, I will give the 8:30 am and 12:30 pm Meet USC presentations today. This one-hour presentation is our most comprehensive program that provides a USC overview along with information on the admission process. Maybe you’ve been to one! Generally, there would have been a lot of concerns, mostly from parents, until students feel more comfortable (cannot forget to ask questions, I’m literally there all day to talk for your requirements.)
9:30 a.m. Once the presentations are over I’ll go back to the counselor desk and guests take a 90-minute tour with a student tour-guide. Our tour guides are incredibly eager and prepared to talk to students that are prospective families. I always talk to our tour guides and admission ambassadors. They’re usually really students that are involved often inform us about their internships and projects, therefore it’s helpful to hear their perspective. Lots of times, they’re a source that is big of for us on current pupil life.
10:00 a.m. Between presentations, I will be typically jumping between talking to prospective students and parents and doing whatever work is needed of me personally that day. That means reviewing applications and answering emails during this particular time of the year. Because your admission that is specific counselor not be available, the therapist assigned to the Admission Center for the day is there to field any concerns. Some times are super busy and a line builds up, other days are light and I can invest a few extra minutes talking to pupils, but I’ll always make yes to be helpful and answer as many questions when I can.
12:00ish. Whenever I can, I run outside to grab a quick lunch. The closest choices to the Admission Center are typical the places in the Tutor Campus Center like Lemonade, Panda Express and Seeds Marketplace. Today, we think I’ll go with Lemonade’s avocado and tomato salad and some pesto pasta (it, you’re missing out) if you haven’t tried.
3:00 p.m. Every once in a while, students will ask me if we can talk privately at the counselor desk. If there’s not really a line, I’m pleased to help and respect your privacy, but pupils should understand that this is not an appointment and I likely won’t be able to spend a lot of time in one-on-one conversations away from the main desk. If the information is relevant to the application and you would really like those reviewing it to keep it in mind, we’ll always suggest that you call or email your admission that is specific counselor.
5:00 p.m. Time to close the Admission Center. Sometimes it is an exhausting day and other times it’s pretty quiet, but either way, being the therapist on contact allows us a chance to interact with students and families and actually get to use the ‘counselor’ part of our title. It’s always nice to understand you helped someone get a much better understanding of the admission process.
